The Problem with Micellar Water
What does Micellar Water do?
This is a form of skin cleanser designed for the removal of light make-up through the action of chemicals added to water.
It is composed of micelles, small lipid molecules suspended in water which, ironically, can leave the skin dehydrated over time owing to the alcohol or other astringent components.
What are the Micellar Water Side Effects?
Common side effects and disadvantages of Micellar Water use:
Dryness and Irritation - This can lead to skin irritation, redness, and a compromised skin barrier.
Acne - can leave a residue on the skin that blocks pores
Allergic Reactions - can cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivities (rash / soreness / inflammation)
Eye Irritation - even when promoted as safe for removing eye makeup
Accelerated Ageing - Stripped away skin barrier exposes skin to UVA light and premature skin ageing
Does Micellar Water damage the skin barrier?
Yes - Micellar water strips away the nutrients and the natural oils that sit on the skin, that would normally keep it hydrated and protected, leading to increased sensitivity and vulnerability to UV light and pollutants.
Can you overuse micellar water?
Yes. Often used with cotton pads, people tend to repeat until the pads are clean. This overuse is damaging to skin because the Micellar water removes the nutrients and the natural oils that sit on the skin, that would normally keep it hydrated and protected. Ironically a sticky residue remains which may attract dirt.
Does Micellar Water Dry Out Skin?
Yes, For all skin types: Normal, oily, or non-sensitive skin, you may only observe dry skin after using it for a couple of weeks. For sensitive and dry skin, you may experience irritation and dryness following the initial use, or after a few applications.
It's quite literally water with harsh chemicals added that dry out and damage the skin cells. Continued use of Micellar Water will not only dry your skin but it will cause premature ageing.
The chemicals within it gradually strip away the nutrients and the natural oils that sit on your skin, that would normally keep it hydrated and protected.
Dehydrated and unprotected skin is open to UVA damage, Free Radical Damage and higher risk of Skin Cancer.
Does Micellar Water Clog Pores?
Yes. it can leave a residue on the skin that blocks pores for those prone to Acne.
Who should not use Micellar Water?
Especially those with skin prone to congestion and acne. Substances in these products tend to leave a coating on the skin, which can obstruct pores and alter the balance of oil production
Can Micellar Water Irritate skin?
Skin irritation and burning have been reported. It seems possible that people who have not previously reported sensitive skin have suffered discomfort and burning skin as after effects.
Does Micellar Water Burn Eyelids?
The skin around the eyes delicate and could be prone to burning from the chemicals within which gradually strip away the nutrients and the natural oils that sit on your skin, that normally keep it hydrated and protected. Dehydrated and unprotected skin is open to UVA damage, Free Radical Damage and higher risk of Skin Cancer.
