Aren't all facial oils the same?

Since we began development in 1998 we have seen and sometimes helped many brands develop natural oil formulations. From the ‘kitchen sink’ mother who blends her own product, to mega corporations wanting to develop a ‘Natural brand’ in the growing market. But, they never take the time to make a product that simply…works! Yes, be natural and organic, but do it for a reason! Get rid of petro-chemicals and synthetic ingredients (not just some, all of them guys!) and replace it with the RIGHT ingredients. So, here’s why you shouldn’t paint us with the same brush…..

Other facial oils:

  • Uses 1 active vital or essential oil

Very commonly you’ll find 1 active in a facial oil (like 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Argan Oil), usually they are cheaper so it’s very attractive. Now that’s ideal for someone who is in their 20’s say and doesn’t require stimulation of collagen or has sensitive skin issues, but if your skin is aged then its just not enough active antioxidants to repair damaged cells. And ideally that’s why you should use an oil.

  • Uses gimmick combinations

Some facial oils will combine more than one active ingredient, which is great but often using active ingredients because they are in fashion and the buzz word of the bloggers. Now the problem with that is the combination may counter act each other or in some cases could become quite toxic. Even worse is when they overuse an active ingredient, or the dosage is way too high in the formulated blend. That’s when severe reactions can occur (for example tea tree used in large percentage of the formulation). The blends must contain the right actives that complement each other, not just look cool on the packaging!

  • Doesn’t understand molecular Geometry

Often blends are made for fashionable taste or put together for smell and texture purposes, which is important as a consumer, but understanding how the molecular structure of organic oils and extracts combine and hold is so important. You’re dealing with nature which is unpredictable at best, so safely blending with scientific understanding of competing molecules is a essential to building the proper foundations of a face oil. A big criticism of facial oils is oils sit on the surface & doesn’t absorb, so you get no benefits and a greasy feeling! This is down to either poor formulating or not combing the right ingredients. If you have combination skin then heavier essential oils should be replaced with a fruit oil, dry skin requires a heavier blend and little fruit oils and damaged skin requires a careful balance of actives with lots of antioxidants and amino acid protein. We’re all guilty of buying a product that smelt nice or had our favourite essential oil, but it’s likely to deliver the opposite of your goal. Then, you end up with an expensive product that hasn’t hydrated your dry skin or has made you even more oily on the surface. That’s why we make 5 different facial oil variations, because everyone has slightly different goals.

Why should you use an oil in the first place?

“It’s down to the size of an oils molecule, which is paramount for healthy skin.” Says John Hamilton, Co-founder of Natural Elements & Dermatology expert.

“An oils purpose is to penetrate the lower levels of the skin, packed with as much as possible in antioxidants and amino acid protein. These 2 benefits are the key to protecting and repairing cells respectively. Its vital components for collagen and fibres to be strong! In our 20 years of botany research the best oils for the desires results are essential oils. There is just nothing out there that comes close to delivering the best results in antioxidants to cells.”

But there are creams that can do that??

“A cream or gel based serum are simply not able to penetrate far enough, the molecule of water is way too big and will remain on the surface of the skin. Now that’s perfect for dehydrated skin because it’s the effect you want…but, we want to go further and so an oil is better for that for anti-ageing purposes.”

Is organic better??

“An argument is made that a synthetic protein in a cream (i.e petro-chemical) can deliver antioxidants better than oils. That’s simply not true. The rule applies to all creams (organic or synthetic). And if your using petro-chemicals and its sitting on the surface…that’s a recipe for an reaction waiting to happen! Avoid it at all costs”
